Swim in an open-air pool

Paris might not be a coastal city, but it’s not short of expanses of water to cool down in when temperatures soar (and we’re not talking about jumping in the Seine). Many normally-indoor swimming pools (External link) have retractable roofs that are rolled back in the summer months; others are permanent al-fresco attractions. Some are even listed for their spectacular architectural adornments, like the Art-Nouveau Piscine de la Butte-aux-Cailles (External link) and the Art-Déco Piscine Pailleron (External link) . One pool that’ll stick in your mind for its modernity is the Piscine Joséphine-Baker (External link) , floating on a pontoon beside the river Seine and surrounded by deckchairs for a post-dip daydream with a view.
