WHY GOING TO THE FRENCH ALPS?
France is an excellence choice for any type of winter holiday in the mountains, home to the world’s largest ski areas with endless kilometres of exciting slopes. French resorts are also often high-altitude – so you’ll wake up to a winter wonderland every morning.
The Paradiski domain in the Tarentaise Valley boasts 400km of pistes centred around two main resorts, Les Arcs and La Plagne, linked by the impressive 200-capacity Vanoise Express gondola which crosses from one to the other in under 10 minutes. Les Arcs’ four villages – 1600, 1800, 1950 and 2000 – are all car free, and in addition to their excellent downhills, a new snowpark known as Mile 8 in Les Arcs 1800 offers a toboggan run, freestyle obstacle course and forest-themed slope. Film fans can enjoy Les Arcs’ Film Festival from 14-21 December, celebrating its 11th anniversary this year with 120 films shown across the resort. In terms of après-ski, Arc 1800 is the liveliest of the four villages, with a couple of nightclubs and regular live music.
THE PERFECT HOLIDAY with your friends
La Plagne, has its own network of eight villages including forested après-ski favourite Bella Plagne, peaceful Plagne Soleil and high-altitude Aime 2000. This season’s high-octane Bobsleigh World Cup will be held in La Plagne from 10-12 January. Other linked resorts in Paradiski include Champagny-en-Vanoise, Les Coches and Montchavin. The highest point of the domain is at around 3,250 metres, making it all-round fantastically snow-sure.
Over in the Maurienne Valley, the vast and diverse area of Les Sybelles is gaining traction with skiers and snowboarders, with 310km of slopes ideal for beginners but also including exciting black descents, and some great off-piste trails to tackle with a guide. The domain covers the villages of Le Corbier, St Jean-d’Arves, Les Bottières, La Toussuire, St Colomban-des-Villards and St Sorlin-d’Arves, the latter being the most challenging. Snowboarders and freestyle skiers love the snowparks in Le Corbier and La Toussuire.
