Feel our top 5 sensory experiences in Grenoble…
See a bird’s eye view of the city on a cable car ride. The first urban cable car in France, it was inaugurated in 1934 before being transformed into a series of round gondolas nicknamed ‘bubbles’ in 1976. It whisks you up 500 metres to the Bastille fort in just five minutes.
Hear summertime music and films. July sees two major festivals in Grenoble: the Cabaret Frappé with pop and electro music, and an open-air short film festival which can be enjoyed from café terraces on Place Saint-André.
Smell local produce at the Place aux Herbes market. It’s held every morning except Monday – pick up Bleu du Vercors Sassenage and St-Marcellin cheeses, Grenoble walnuts and Matheysine murçon pork sausage flavoured with aniseed.
Taste the local Chartreuse liqueur. Love it or hate it, you can’t visit Grenoble without taking a sip. Try the Chartreuse Soleil cocktail and a wealth of dishes using Chartreuse, a bright green infusion of 130 local herbs and plants from the mountain slopes.
Touch rock faces on a climbing adventure in the mountains. Grenoble has several wonderful natural parks on its doorstep including Chartreuse, Vercors and Chamrousse. Children will love the Accrobastille or Chamrousse adventure parks too, with obstacle courses and zip wires.
Think Grenoble is just a ski capital? Think again. First-class museums, history-filled châteaux, parks and fountains, all set against the mountain backdrop: this is a perfect city break destination with or without your salopettes. Grenoble has been successfully reinventing itself for the past two centuries, often leading the way with cultural, social and industrial trends – and its centre will make your heart sing, between the café terraces on Place Saint-André and the sun-speckled ambiance of Place Saint-Claire.
