Angers in Loire Valley

Charming architecture, refined cuisine, renowned vineyards, festivals and monuments, superb parks and gardens... there are plenty of things to see and do in Angers (External link). The old part of the town is mainly pedestrianised and many of the sites of interest are near each other, so you can do it all on foot. Flanked by 17 towers, Angers’ imposing château (considered part of the Loire Valley châteaux) is a focal point from which you can admire the magnificent view of the Maine River, and wander around beautiful gardens. The château is famous for its 14th-century religious artwork, in particular Le Tenture de l’Apocalypse tapestry, which is a staggering 103m long. The Saint-Martin collegiate church, town’s oldest, has undergone a 20-year restoration and is also worth a visit. Also don’t miss…

  • The Saint-Maurice cathedral, one of the area’s major examples of Gothic architecture
  • The Fine Arts museum, with its nod to 18th-century French painters and masterpieces by Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard and Chardin
  • The David d'Angers gallery, housing works by the eponymous sculptor
  • La Maison d’Adam, a stylish timber-framed house adorned with carvings
  • The Musée Jean-Lurçat with its exceptional Chant du Monde tapestry, a contemporary response to the Tenture de l’Apocalypse
  • Le Carré Cointreau, home of the Cointreau brand whose guided tours involve obligatory tastings
  • Terra Botanica, the first European park devoted to the world of plants, with 110,000m2 of gardens, greenhouses and aquatic spaces
