Wine Auction at Hospices de Beaune

Each year, Hospices Civils in Beaune, Burgundy, sell their wine production during a large auction orchestrated by Christie’s. Wine lovers should definitely not miss this three-day event. The 2018 edition took place from Nov 16–18.

Burgundy wines are at the heart of great festivities organized in Beaune each year on the third weekend of November. Over “Three Glorious Days” you celebrate the wealth of Burgundy vineyards, and the highlight of the event is the auction at Hospices de Beaune. Novices and aficionados alike come together to visit cellars and partake in wine tastings, while the Beaune Congress Center hosts the Fête du Vin, an event bringing together the one hundred or so appellations in Burgundy.

828 Items For Sale in 2018

For this year’s 158th edition, 828 items originating from the winemaking estate of the Hospices went for sale on November 18, under the Grande Halle in Beaune. As it is each year, the profits of the President’s lot go to charity. Wine lovers be warned: the 2018 President’s lot was a 228-liter barrel of Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi, one of the most prestigious Grand Cru terroirs, from Corton hill.

The Hospices winemaking estate was formed from donations and inheritances over the past 500 years, totaling today nearly 60 hectacres (150 acres), 120 of which are allocated for pinot noir, and the rest for chardonnay. Almost 85% of the vines are classified as Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, located mostly around Beaune, but also in Côte de Nuits and Mâconnais territory. The wines are a result of harmonious blends from different terroirs and bear the names of the vineyard benefactors.
