November at Grand Palais: Paris Photo

No less than 166 galleries invest the Grand Palais in November. The opportunity for art lovers to (re)discover talents from all around the world.

For its 22nd edition, Paris Photo promises eclectic fare. Here's a little taste of the tour, not to be missed for photography lovers!

If French and American galleries still largely dominate, the perimeter is gradually expandings to allow for recruits in the photography world. Thus, with galleries from countries in Eastern Europe (Hungary in particular) and Africa gaining recognition, this new edition presents a wide panorama of photographic works currently on the market. For the first time, we can admire the selection of Galerie 127 located in Marrakech, the only gallery exclusively devoted to photography in the Maghreb (Northwestern Africa).

Large formats and large-scale installations in the VIP lounge

The Prismes sector, located in the Salon d'Honneur on the 1st floor, displays the exceptional works. Large formats or large-scale installations: the space also emphasizes the multiplicity of uses that are made of the photographic medium. As for the Movies sector, it highlights the relationship between still and moving images in photographic creation. Screened at the MK2 Grand Palais cinema, these movies are an opportunity to learn more about the new photographic and film forms.

The regulars of the fair will discover a new sector this year—Curiosa, which aims to highlight the photographic work focused around a specific theme. For this first edition, curated by Martha Kirszenbaum, Curiosa presents a selection of erotic images.

From a historical perspective as well as a contemporary approach, this new space will question the habitual representations of women's bodies while deconstructing the "male gaze" which too often imposes an heterosexual consumption of female bodies.

To do this, Martha Kirszenbaum insists on the multiplicity of methods used, and is very interested in the diversity of the generations of exposed photographers.

Women in the spotlight in 2018

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Culture and Paris Photo, female photographers will occupy a pimary place in the 2018 edition to correct the lack of visibility on the photography market.

That is why, through a display entitled Elles X Paris Photo, the curator Fannie Escoulen spotlights the work of these women with a historical and contemporary layout.
Beyond the Grand Palais, the route will extend to other places of the Capital. It's the perfect opportunity to discover other female photographers of talent!
