To accompany the opening of MoCo, the city of Montpellier will be transformed into a museum with an event called “100 artists in town”, running from 8 June to 28 July 2019. This is your chance to explore or rediscover this creative city in Occitanie through the prism of contemporary art.
At the origin of this event: a crazy idea that emerged in the 1970s thanks to the avant-garde spirit of four artists from Montpellier, founders of the Support / Surface movement. This major movement of contemporary art illustrates the thought that is made around the support of the canvas but also its surface, hence the name.
On this occasion, the movement initiators (Tjeerd Alkema, Jean Azemard, Vincent Bioulès and Alain Clement) are taking over the streets of the city to exhibit their works. An original way to question the technique of painting and anchor creativity in the local area.
The event “100 artists in town” has been specially organised to accompany the opening of MoCo, scheduled for 29 June.
The event is aptly named, since not only will the traditional exhibition spaces be used, but also the public squares, cafés, shops and façades of the city. All will become a theatre of expression for 100 handpicked artists. It will be impossible to escape the richness of contemporary creation during these two months of festivities!
Exceptional artists for the opening of MoCo in Montpellier
Among the invited artists will be Hicham Berrada, a Franco-Moroccan visual artist combining art and scientific research; Fabrice Hyber, recently elected to the Academy of Fine Arts; and the self-taught Cameroonian Pascale Marthine Tayou. An exceptional programme of works and installations specially designed for the public space by 100 passionate artists – truly exciting!
