Nice: Musée National Marc Chagall

On the Cimiez Hill, just above Nice, the Musée Marc Chagall finds itself in an extraordinary location. An alcove of greenery bathed in a warm, calm atmosphere, this collection currently has a Biblical theme.

A painter of Russian origin, Marc Chagall offered a beautiful gift to France throughout the 1960s and 1970s - seventeen masterpieces constituting his work on the Bible. These pieces make up part of the permanent collection of more than 400 paintings, watercolors, ink drawings, and pastels.

Calm and Colorful

This universe, dedicated to the works of Chagall, is teeming with colors used in original and unexpected ways.

In a calm monastery, you are invited to embark on the same legendary path as Marc Chagall (1887-1985), one of the pioneers of Modernism, a cultural movement that took Western societies by storm from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th.

During your journey, you will pass through a first room forming three polygons. You'll be able to admire 12 large paintings, illustrating the first two books of the Old Testament: Genesis and Exodus.

Biblical Works

Another room in the shape of a hexagon presents five compositions on the theme of the Chant of Solomon, another book of the Old Testament. Furthermore, an auditorium will allow you to discover the life of the painter through a passionate film.

Chagall's Universe of Light

Created by the architect André Hermant, the Musée Chagall, spread out across one level, naturally aims to be a welcoming place for visitors; however, it takes things one steps further. Works are placed on a veritable pedestal.

The main room is an absolute flood of light - the ideal conditions to discover the paintings, mosaics, windows, and paper drawings, thanks to an architectural design well adapted to the artist's works.

Furthermore, the artist himself was able to participate in the museum's design while he was still alive, ensuring that the building truly honored his talent.

Olive Tree Parc

The museum is full of culture, of course, but nature too - the Musée National Marc Chagall invites all visitors to walk around its grounds and its splendid olive tree park, which dominates the fascinating city of Nice.
