If there was a capital of the great outdoors, the Alps could be it. The longest mountain chain in Europe stretches more than 1,000km across eight countries – but its heart lies in France, where some of the world’s best ski resorts rub shoulders, from historic Chamonix and Megève to modern, high-altitude Val Thorens and Les Arcs.
The French Alps are a feast for all five senses: lofty peaks against bright blue sky; bubbling hot tubs and clinking cowbells; seductive wafts of melted Raclette; spicy glasses of vin chaud; cold snow crunching underfoot. Whether you’re coming as a couple, as a group or with family, everyone’s entertained all day long. Skiers and snowboarders are spoilt for choice – but so are ice skaters, showshoers, spa-lovers, nature-lovers and foodies.
