Perched on Brittany’s southernmost tip at the mouth of the river Odet, Bénodet is an easily digestible seaside resort and one of Brittany’s most popular port towns and resorts. Its beaches include the Plage du Trez at the heart of town, the Plage de la Pointe St-Gilles (the perfect spot for some enjoyable shellfish picking), the Plage du Letty on the lagoon, and the Plage du Coq, which enjoys natural exposure to the late-afternoon sun.
In terms of activities, the resort has a whole host of options for young and old – sailing, sports, walking along the coast, culture (including the Musée du Bord de Mer and two biscuit manufacturers which welcome visitors) and boat trips along the Odet river or to the Glénan archipelago, which consists of seven small islands boasting idyllic white sandy beaches. Be sure to explore out as far as the lighthouse, where you can ascend the tower for the best views of the coast around Bénodet and across to the islands. There are numerous hikes to enjoy, including the GR34 which passes through Bénodet, and trails marked by the French Hiking Federation. A total of 250km of walking routes take in the rich natural drama of the seaside landscape.
Most events in the town take place in the summer months as part of the town's bustling high season. In May, the Odet Yacht Club organises the Obelix Trophy, a sailing race with about 100 boats taking part over four days. The club’s activity is mainly dedicated to the organisation of nautical events in the form of regattas – but also simply to meetings for boat enthusiasts. Every year Bénodet also hosts a series of Friday-evening music concerts – French pop rock group Superbus played there in 2005. A market is held in the town centre each Monday.
