Food and wine

New Aquitaine (External link) is an absolute paradise for foodies. Enjoy confit duck and foie gras, wild mushrooms, walnuts and chestnuts, Cabécou goats’ cheese from Dordogne, truffles from Sarlat, oysters from Île d’Oléron, prunes from Agen and spicy espelette peppers from the Basque country around Biarritz and Bayonne. Among New Aquitaine’s sweet treats are pralines de Blaye (almond sweets), gratin de poires au Sauternes (a pear pudding), cannelés (miniature cakes from Bordeaux) and macarons from Saint-Émilion.

The region is also synonymous with wine, home to the Bordeaux and Bergerac vineyards which encompass such famous names and appellations as Pauillac, Pomerol, Sauternes and Saint-Émilion. Cognac is also made in New Aquitaine, in and around the eponymous town – and try a glass of Pineau de Charentes, a local aperitif made with cognac.
