6 places for a cosy mountain lunch with the family

Warming up by a crackling wood fire, the smell of good Savoyard dishes wafting through the air and tasting their goodness: isn’t that the definition of happiness en famille? Here we focus on five high-altitude restaurants with a truly authentic soul.

Les Vieilles Luges: a cosy nest in Les Houches

As soon as you push open the vast wooden door, a sign stating ‘La maison du bonheur’ (‘The house of happiness’) sets the tone for this restaurant. The ambient heat warms your face and a magical atmosphere pervades. Established in 1479, the traditional chalet of Les Vieilles Luges (External link) is like a mountain refuge, partially engulfed by snow. Serving both traditional and more refined cuisine, the restaurant is one of Les Houches’ gourmet addresses and is not to be missed.
Address: 810 Chemin de la Carbotte, 74310 Les Houches

Le Café Woody: cultural cuisine in Megève

To introduce the kids to the comedies of Woody Allen in a cosy space in Megève, the Woody Café (External link) is a must. Here you’ll find 80s-style armchairs, a higgledy-piggledy library, old-fashioned posters of the director, an open fireplace, wood everywhere and, most importantly, a children’s area that will put everyone at ease. This is Woody’s place!
Address: Chemin de l'Encraty, 74120 Demi-Quartier

Perched at 1,100m at the heart of the Regional Park of the Ballons des Vosges, time stops at Le Collet (External link) . The charm of the décor and vintage crockery marry deliciously well with the menu of master French chef Olivier Lapôtre. A simple and comforting cuisine. If you like this place, stop by Mémé à Gérardmer a few kilometres from the Col de la Schlucht, a small bazaar / grocery store that will remind you of carefree childhood.
Address: Route de Colmar, 88400 Xonrupt-Longemer

La Païka: les arts de la table in Les Gets

Rustic décor and a rural environment make La Païka (External link) a place where you want to stay with your family forever. This renovated farmhouse is not only attractive for its fresh, fire-grilled produce and sumptuous patisserie, but also for its vast terrace where you can chill out in the sun without a care in the world.
Address: Les Vorosses -La Turche, 74260 Les Gets

“Great views from sunrise to sunset” is written in black and white on the menu of this restaurant. Between Mont-Blanc and Tarentaise, and conceived by two locals from Montvalezan, L’Antigel (External link) (French only) has mastered the art of warming both bodies and hearts. Its cosy, atypical setting coupled with a cuisine based on fresh produce are undoubtedly its major selling points. Worth knowing: every Thursday is fondue night, with a ride in a tank!
Address: L'Antigel, Rosière 1850, 73700 Montvalezan

Au P’tit Truc: lunch at altitude in Vaujany

What could be better than a tasty break between two runs? A sunny terrace, delicious burgers and tasty sandwiches just as you like them – this is what’s on offer at the P’tit Truc, a small, high-altitude chalet restaurant in Vaujany. Here everything is simply delicious! Non-skiers can also come up to the restaurant on foot too, and enjoy the spectacle of the snowy mountains.
Address: Au P’tit Truc, Monfrais, 38114 Vaujany
