Le Tournoi des 6 Stations: Rugby in the Alps 13-19 February 2017
Calling all rugby fans! If you’re in the French Alps this week and missing the Six Nations action, you could enjoy an altogether different kind of rugby match… played on (yes, you’ve guessed it) the snow.
Inspired by the Six Nations, the Tournoi des 6 Stations (Six Resorts Tournament) is a rugby 7s tournament organised in the French Alps by former international rugby player Yann Delaigue, and now in its fifth year. Former international and non-professional rugby players participate across six ski resorts in Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Each resort has a dedicated team made up of five ex-international players and five amateurs – this year welcomes Mike Tindall as one of the pros. Each day three matches are played for 16 minutes in two eight-minute halves, with the players’ gear adapted to the snowy conditions.
Delaigue had the idea for the tournament as he and friends messed about with a ball while on a skiing holiday. He realised that rugby and the mountains share the same values: solidarity, sharing, mutual respect and team spirit.
The tournament began on Monday and you can catch the matches in the following resorts for the rest of this week:
Wednesday 15 February: Valmorel
Thursday 16 February: Les Contamines
Friday 17 February: La Clusaz
Sunday 19 February: Châtel
Activities start from 9am each day, with the bulk of theaction taking place from 3pm and match kick-off at 6.30pm.
