Saint-Tropez Saint Tropez fr

The renowned starlet of the Côte d'Azur has always known how to draw in fashionable celebrities. Picasso was one of them! He liked its summer atmosphere. 1951 was the year of awakening for his works on Saint-Tropez. In the company of his new muse, Geneviève Laporte, he painted a series of nudes and made drawings of his friend, Paul Eluard, in his apartment. Remember Odalisque! The legendary little port offers many charms in a mild Mediterranean environment. An atmosphere that is representative of the works of the great artists of the 20th century.

An essential visit on the art trail, the Annonciade museum is devoted to the great figures of modern art (1890 – 1950). Painters such as Signac, Bonnard and Duffy are exhibited here, along with Matisse who introduced Saint-Tropez to Picasso.

To see and do

The port of Saint-Tropez: the star of the coastline, Saint-Tropez is in the middle of a magnificent gulf that has always attracted painters and writers. Today, celebrities come here in the height of summer. In winter, when it’s calmer, people come to stroll around and to appreciate its luminosity and picturesque character.

The Maures cornice: a balcony with contrasted reliefs, the Maures cornice offers exceptional sea views. A walk in the Rayol gardens is a must – it has over four hundred species of Mediterranean plants.

Our favourites

The Annonciade Museum: mainly focused on modern art, this museum exhibits famous impressionist and pointillist painters, like Signac, Seurat, Matisse, etc.

The village of Ramatuelle: in the heart of the vineyards, this village houses many flower-decorated houses and narrow streets, some of which end in an archway. www.ramatuelle-tourisme.com

La chartreuse de la Verne (The Verne Monastery): in the middle of the Maures massif, isolated among ancient chestnut trees in absolute solitude, the Verne monastery is a wonderful sanctuary that is well worth the detour. Walking and mountain bike trails. www.collobrieres-tourisme.com
