Feel Atlantic Loire: for lovers of history and the outdoors
‘Atlantic Loire’ refers to the region of Pays de la Loire outside the Loire Valley (explore more here). There’s much more to Pays de la Loire besides its famous riverside route of châteaux: there’s a string of chic Atlantic resorts with beautiful beaches; exquisite islands; vibrant historic cities including Nantes, Angers, Saumur and Le Mans; nationally-renowned cycling trails (La Loire à Vélo, La Vélodyssée…); vineyards, major festivals and a much-loved theme park, Le Puy du Fou.
The region is defined by its rivers as well as its coastline – the Loire, the Sarthe and the Mayenne – and it’s a paradise for outdoorsy types. As well as watersports and cycling you can enjoy horse-riding and golf in abundance here, or simply recharge your batteries at a thalassotherapy spa. It’s a great destination for both an action-packed family holiday and a more sedate break for friends or couples, as well as being a mecca for lovers of history and gastronomy. And with more traditional arts and crafts than you can shake a stick at, you’d better ensure you have plenty of space in your luggage for local fabrics, ceramics and much more.
