"Cherbourg… and freedom came from the sea"
Part of the official commemoration of the "70th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy", the temporary exhibition in La Cité de la Mer, "Cherbourg … and Freedom came from the Sea", is first and foremost one of the many actions and events scheduled for Normandy during the spring of 2014.
La Cité de Mer’s project will provide an echo to the new areas in Cherbourg-Octeville’s Liberation Museum (Musée de la Libération, Fort du Roule, Cherbourg-Octeville) that display articles relating to day-to-day life in and around Cherbourg during the liberation.
The “Cherbourg … and Freedom came from the Sea” exhibition in La Cité de la Mer also highlights other places and heritage sites related to the Battle of Normandy, and linked directly to the history of the liberation of Cherbourg: the Seaborne infantry divisions - landing at Utah Beach – and the Airborne divisions – deployed in the sector around Sainte-Mère-Église (south-east of Cherbourg), and whose "main objective" was to capture Cherbourg’s deep-water harbour.
The "Cherbourg … and Freedom came from the Sea" exhibition is also one of the events that will be organised by La Cité de la Mer in conjunction with Le Mémorial de Caen, as part of the partnership agreement that the two local tourism sites signed recently.
The temporary exhibition will be set up in the heart of a place that is emblematic of the history of the liberation of Cherbourg: the Transatlantic liner terminal.
It will include striking images that have never been shown in public in such an exhibition. The extremely large format photos and contemporary films will help the public to understand fully the importance of the role played by the port of Cherbourg in the logistics of the liberation of France.
Over and above the technical feat, the exhibition will illustrate above all the trials undergone by the people –both military and civilian– in the period immediately after the liberation.
