Working with the Biennale of contemporary arts, every two years Lyon becomes the dance capital - a successful project since 1984. The recipe? Showing the aesthetic diversity of this art, and offering the public landmarks to find their way inside the abundance of genres.

In 1984, Guy Darmet – then head of the "Maison de la Danse" of Lyon - created the worldwide art event. He aimed at riding the wave of the contemporary dance popularity, especially the new French dance.

Popular and experimental event

Since then, the triumph has been going crescendo. Dominique Hervieu – the current artistic director of the Biennale de la danse - reveals the secret of this success story: “the secret lays in the strength of the piece, whatever its category: contemporary, hip-hop, neoclassical, circus, etc. That’s why the Biennale de la danse of Lyon is both popular and experimental and can spread out on the  place Bellecour in front of 15,000 people as well as in a small room in front of 120 spectators.”

This desire to make popular dancing as a form of art is still present in the 2016 edition. For the 17th time, the Biennale de la danse will present 37 shows and two performances in the public space of which 23 new creations and French premieres in Lyon.

2016: conversation between performing dance and popular dance

For this edition, the emphasis was put on the conversation between performing dance and popular dance thus offering a snapshot of the current scene.

Outside the shows, the Biennale organises conferences, debates, workshops and the famous parade with its 5,000 participants gathered around the theme Ensemble! (Together!)

This year, the parade – the largest choreographed parade in Europe - will bring together the aficionados of the dance arts at the Stade de Gerland.

For the grand finale of the parade, don’t miss Yohan Bourgeois’ contemporary piece, organised on the place Bellecour.
