The International City of Lace and Fashion in Calais

    A palace of lace.

The Cité internationale de la dentelle et de la mode in Calais is an institution which explores the world of lace - a key industry in Calais - and fashion. The building was designed by Moatti et Rivière, a Parisian agency, who also designed in 2005 the headquarters of the couture design house, Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Located on the quay of this northern city, the centre presents the skills and techniques of lace-making, its economical and social history, and the uses of lace, including some very contemporary creations.
The Cité is located within a converted lace factory dating from the 1870s. The architects chose to add to the old factory a contemporary building which itself evokes lace. Its undulating glass façade has a motif recalling the "Jacquard card": the blueprint punched with holes which enabled mechanical lacemaking in the Calais tradition.
