Rendez-vous at François Mitterrand's native house
François Mitterrand was born on October 26th 1916 in this house located in Abel Guy street number 22 in the town of Jarnac, one of the main cities producing cognac from the Charente department.
Elected in 1981 and re-elected in 1988 President of the French Republic, he remained in office 14 years until May 1995. Previously he had been constantly elected (but for one year) as a member of the Parliament under the Fourth Republic (1946-1958) and appointed minister eleven times.
The native house
He was always very fond of his native home and of the “country of his childhood”, as he often stated.
Therefore, he visited regularly Jarnac where he met at least once a year with his three sisters and three brothers.
The house was built at the beginning of the 19th century. It is featuring of the architecture of the region.
Through more than 10 rooms of the house opened to the visit, furniture, paintings and personal belongings of the family have been preserved since four generations.
The permanent exhibition shows photos, documents, books, class books, speeches and manuscripts of the former President.
Moreover, the guided tour allows the visitor to discover their story since the middle of the nineteenth century.
You will also walk through the garden and be familiar with an old barrel-maker’s workshop used when the adjacent building of the vinegar factory owned by the family was running during the first half of the twentieth century.
