Rendez-vous at Fort Saint Elme in Collioure
Sentinelle de la Côte Vermeille
Between Port-Vendres and Collioure, the Fort Saint Elme dominates both ports.
Originally an 8th century signal tower, it was completed by a redoubt during the reign of Charles 5th of Spain, between 1538 an 1552. Its star-shape and its walls, several feet thick, were able to withstand modern weapons and artillery. The Fort has witnessed five centuries of conflict between France and Spain.
The visitor will also discover collections of antique weapons, a variety of exhibitions and a new vision of history.
