Feel our top 5 sensory experiences in Saint-Etienne…

See exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, which opened in 1987 and was the first of its kind in the region. Enjoy one of France’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art here, plus one of its four design collections. Around 15 exhibitions are put on each year.

Hear the sounds of nature in the Parc du Pilat, covering 65,000 hectares to the east of Saint-Etienne, and crossed by three GR hiking trails as well as numerous cycle paths. The park’s landscapes are diverse, with forests, meadows and even rows of vines.

Smell a creamy Fourme de Montbrison, a blue cheese made in the area. Its AOC status was granted in 1972.

Taste chocolate in traditional local boutiques such as Weiss, Coulois and Chocolat des Princes. It’s an Amiens speciality!

Touch the walls of the tunnels at the Musée de la Mine, housed in the buildings of the last functioning coal mine which closed in 1973.

Centre of design and creativity, Saint-Etienne is situated 50km from Lyon in eastern France and is home to the International Design Biennial, a major showcase for design with thematic exhibitions, lectures and performances. This forward-thinking town is full of modern buildings, from its Zénith event venue with over 7,000 seats to the Museum of Modern Art. Sign up to an architecture-themed tour to appreciate the sophisticated urban design, to which Le Corbusier is also attributed.
