Feel our top 5 sensory experiences in Poitiers…

See Romanesque churches. Until the Revolution, this sublimely beautiful city was known as the 'town of 100 bell towers'; the remarkable Romanesque churches that remain today are in part a legacy of Eleanor of Aquitaine's financial support.

Hear a concert at the Éclat d’Été. World music, gospel or classical, vocal or instrumental: you name it and it’s here, all through the summer.

Smell the local melons. Sweet, juicy, firm and fragrant, melons thrive in the clay-limestone soil of Haut-Poitou.

Taste farci Poitevin, an intriguing-looking pâté whose green colour is due to its herb content. It’s simple, rustic and delicious.

Touch interactive multimedia exhibits at Futuroscope. France’s second-largest theme park plunges you into a fascinating futuristic world and won the prize for the world’s best attraction with “Arthur l’Aventure 4D”, designed by Luc Besson.

History is omnipresent in Poitiers, positively oozing from its 80 listed monuments and half-timbered houses and contrasted by curving contemporary structures. The city was built during antiquity on a rocky promontory encircled by two rivers. Make a beeline for the collegiate church of Notre-Dame la Grande, famed for its sculpted façade, and immerse yourself in the old town, pausing beside private mansions and in pretty gardens. Poitiers has one of the oldest universities in the country, established in 1432 and today a linchpin of this lively city: students make up 25% of the population.
